CLASSROOM COOKING
Smashed Potatoes

You can mash potatoes with the skin on - that way they are smashed not mashed!

You will need:
  • one potato per person
  • milk
  • margarine or butter

What to do:
  • Cut the potatoes into even sized pieces. Peel them if you want to. Almost cover with cold water.
  • Bring to the boil, when boiling reduce the heat to a simmer.
  • Continue simmering, with the lid on, for about 20 minutes or until they are soft.
  • Drain to remove all the water.
  • Add about half a cup of milk and a Tbsp of margarine. Mash until there are no lumps - add more milk until they are nice and smooth.
  • Enjoy with a friend!

TEACHER TIPS:
  • Use a large pot and cook enough for all the children to taste and enjoy. We have found that almost all children will want to try some. Allow one potato per child. Involve the children in preparing to make the smash.
  • Peeling potatoes can be tricky for small children so making smash is the perfect solution - and the fact that the potato is a lot better for you if the skin on is an added bonus.
  • The children will love mashing it - share the finished smash with the children.
  • Making Potato Smash is so easy you could set it as a homework task - the parents will love it that the children have learnt to contribute such a popular food to the family meal!
